Smoked Shredded Pork Shoulder

This is great for picnics, cook outs, family get-togethers, or almost any occasion you choose, especially if you’re trying to feed a crowd.

Smoked Shredded Pork Shoulder

  • Sandwich buns (I like to use mini-buns)
  • BBQ sauce (home made or store bought – my current favorite is Carolina Sauce with a mustard/vinegar base)
  • Smoker bag
  • BBQ seasoning (home made or store bought)
  • Pork Butt (4 – 5 pounds or what ever is available – much bigger may not fit in the bag)

Season the pork butt well with your seasoning of choice (I use a “barnyard seasoning” made at a local market).
Place pork butt in the smoker bag, fat side up and seal. If it doesn’t quite fit, just trim and place extra in bag. Turn up the edges slightly (in case it leaks) and place on a sheet pan (in case it leaks a lot). Place in a pre-heated 475º F oven. Bake for 15 minutes then reduce heat to 375º F and bake for 1 hr 45 min. Reduce heat to 220º F for two hours.
Remove from oven and carefully cut the bag open from the top. Allow pork to rest for a few minutes to redistribute the juices.
Shred the pork with forks.
Serve on buns with your favorite BBQ sauce. If you’re having several people and want to serve a few different sauces, put each one in plastic squeeze bottles and label them. Then let your family and friends have at it. Enjoy!

If you’re serving a crowd, keep the shredded pork in a slow cooker to keep it warm. Put a slotted spoon in it and you are good to go.
